Dry brushing has many health benefits from smoother skin to helping with lymphatic drainage. If you aren't familiar with the technique, it involves a body massage with a dry, stiff brush. I have started using it regularly and can notice a difference.
Dry brushing is also known as the Garshana, a traditional Ayurvedic treatment.
What is dry brushing?
It's a combination of exfoliation and massage that involves a dry bristle brush that you move over your body in a circular motion prior to bathing or showering. The firm brush gives your body a nice exfoliation, while the pressure helps stimulate your circulation and your lymphatic drainage, which in turn helps eliminate toxins.
In dry brushing, the skin is typically brushed toward the heart, starting at the feet and hands and brushing toward the chest.
What are the benefits of dry brushing?
1. Stimulates the Lymphatic System
The lymphatic systems is a major part of the immune system. It is made up of organs, lymph nodes, ducts, and vessels that transport lymph throughout the entire body. Many of these vessels run directly underneath the skin. Because your skin helps detoxify the body, dry brushing your skin can helpyour lymphatic systems release toxins from the body which will ulitmately aid in preventing illness.
2. Reduces Cellulite
Ok, everyone hates cellulite! Cellulite is often caused by fluid retention, lack of circulation, weak collagen structure, increased body fat, hormonal imbalances, genetic and inflammation. While there are several claims to treatments, dry brushing may help stimulate cells and break down toxins beneath the skin which may act as a natural remedy.
This benefit is often noticed immediately. The dry brush process of running a bristled brush over your skin loosens and removes dead skin cells when doing this consistently 2 to 3 times per week.
4. Cleans the Pores
According to Dr. Cynthia Thaik, MA - Cardiologist, when your pores are clogged with dead skin cells, pollutants and cosmetics, it cause your liver and kidney to work a little harder to get rid of the toxins. Dry brushing your face helps to unclog the pores and helps the skin to absorb needed nutrients.
5. Stress Relief
As with any good massage or self-care technique, your body will relax as well as your mind. The gentle circular strokes over the entire body sends a signal to your mind to let go and destress. The shower afterwards brings your body into a full relax state.
