The Benefits of Practicing Gratitude


Expressing gratitude in words and actions are powerful spiritual vitamins!

Research shows that the benefits of appreciation and thankfulness are many. Having an attitude of gratitude is good for your physical, mental and spiritual well-being. Being in a state of thankfulness feels good and is good for you. Those who make a habit of feeling and practicing gratitude experience the same benefits as happy people do They have lower levels of stress hormones and less risk of viral infections. They exercise more, sleep better, live longer, have higher incomes and more satisfying relationships.

What is gratitude?

It's an affirmation that good exist in our world, and benefits we've received. And, we recognize that the sources of this goodness are outside of ourselves. We acknowledge that other people or even higher powers, if you're of a spiritual mindset has given us many gifts, big and small to help us achieve goodness in our lives.

Gratitude encourages us not only to appreciate gifts but to repay them. Sociologist Greg Simmel called it "the moral memory of mankind."

5 Ways to Practice the Power of Gratitude

Let's put the power of gratitude to work to create more joy and inner peace in your mind, body and spirit. Establish a daily habit of expressing words of gratitude.

  • Practice being thankful for big and little things, even if what you have is less than good. Saying thank you for even annoying or difficult circumstances will instantly shift your perspective and relieve stress.

  • Write a gratitude journal or make a list of all you are grateful for. Be sure to be specific.

  • Sing spiritual songs of thankfulness.

  • Post meaningful quotes or prayers about gratitude.

  • When gathered with friends and family or at a work meeting, start the conversation on a positive note. Ask each person to a sentence on what went well during their day or on a project.

Giving thanks and expressing gratitude in words and action is not a cure to all negative things we experience. It is a healing balm to your heart and for those on who receive it. It is a willingness to step into the flow of life with its ups and downs and to be a light of unconditional love in all circumstances. Spoken or felt with sincerity thankfulness, it will raise your vibration and open you to new awareness and possibilities. Expressing gratitude may well be one of the most important things you can do for your health and happiness.
